What’s New With Search “Schema” in 2026

What is schema? Schema is a set of hidden labels on a web page. People don’t see them, but search engines do. They tell a search engine things like “this number is a price” or “this name is the author of the article.” The shared list of labels is called Schema.org. Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and Yandex started it together in 2011.

1. FAQ boxes are gone from Google. On May 7, 2026, Google stopped showing the drop-down question boxes under search results. The FAQ label is still valid. It just doesn’t make those boxes show up in Google anymore. Website owners don’t need to remove it.

2. Google dropped other types too. Between June 2025 and May 2026, Google stopped supporting several labels, including Book Actions, Course Info, Claim Review and Vehicle Listing. Google’s official list now shows 25 supported types of enhanced search results.

3. New labels were added. In 2026, Schema.org added new labels, including ones for marking content that was made by AI.

4. The big debate: does schema help with AI search? Many SEO companies say yes. They point to statements from Google and Microsoft that structured data helps their AI systems understand content. But Google’s own guide, updated in July 2026, says structured data is not required for AI search, and there is no special schema you need to add. Schema still helps search results look better. Big promises about “getting picked up by AI” are worth taking with a grain of salt, since many come from companies selling SEO services.
